The ECOWAS Commission has presented a cheque of FCFA 200 million to the Government of Senegal to assist victims of the recent flood that claimed many lives and caused considerable damage to property in the nation’s capital,
Dakar.
The cheque was presented to President Macky Sall by the ECOWAS Commissioner for Human Development and Gender, Dr. Adrienne Diop during a ceremony at Presidential Palace in Dakar on 13th September 2012.
The Commissioner explained that the donation was a demonstration of ECOWAS’ will to support its Member States afflicted by natural disasters.
“It is a symbolic contribution which we hope would bring some measure of relief to the affected Senegalese people who have been seriously hit by the flooding,” she affirmed, adding that “integration is a process of coming to the aid of people of our region in crisis, and the ECOWAS Vision 2020 involves moving from an ECOWAS of States to an ECOWAS of People.”
Commissioner Diop recalled the recent adoption of the ECOWAS Humanitarian Policy by the regional Heads of State and Government, one of whose objectives is to assist Member States to deal with the consequences of crises and natural disasters.
President Sall expressed his appreciation and gratitude, on behalf of the Government and People of Senegal, to the President of the ECOWAS Commission,
His Excellency Kadré Désiré Ouédraogo, for the financial support.
The Senegalese leader and Dr. Diop later discussed regional peace and security issues, especially the crises in some Member States.
